How to Care for Type 3 and 4 Hair After Bleaching or Dyeing

How to Care for Type 3 and 4 Hair After Bleaching or Dyeing

Bleaching and dyeing can be especially harsh on Type 3 (curly) and Type 4 (coily/kinky) hair, which naturally tends to be drier and more fragile. Proper care is essential to keep your curls hydrated, strong, and defined. Here’s how to maintain the health of your color-treated hair:

1. Use a Sulfate-Free, Moisturising Shampoo

Sulfate-free shampoos are a must for preserving moisture in Type 3 and 4 hair. Look for gentle cleansers with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, or coconut milk to cleanse without stripping natural oils.

2. Deep Condition Twice a Week

Color-treated curly and coily hair needs extra moisture. Use a deep conditioner at least twice a week to replenish hydration and maintain elasticity. Look for formulas with protein (like hydrolyzed keratin or silk protein) to strengthen the hair while balancing with moisture-rich ingredients like honey, avocado, or glycerin.

3. Follow the LOC or LCO Method

To lock in moisture, use the Liquid-Oil-Cream (LOC) or Liquid-Cream-Oil (LCO) method. Apply a water-based leave-in conditioner, followed by a nourishing oil like castor or argan oil, and finish with a rich cream to seal in hydration. This helps prevent dryness and keeps curls soft and defined.

4. Reduce Heat Styling & Always Use Heat Protectant

Bleached or dyed curls are more prone to breakage. Minimize heat styling, and when using blow dryers or straighteners, always apply a heat protectant to shield hair from further damage.

5. Wash Hair Less Often & Co-Wash in Between

Washing too frequently can strip moisture from already fragile color-treated hair. Wash once a week with a gentle shampoo and co-wash (conditioner-only wash) in between to refresh your curls without drying them out.

6. Protective Styling Helps Retain Moisture

Opt for low-manipulation styles like braids, twists, or wigs to minimize breakage and moisture loss. Avoid tight styles that pull on your edges, and use satin-lined accessories to reduce friction.

7. Nighttime Protection Is Essential

Sleep with a satin or silk scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase to prevent moisture loss and friction that can lead to breakage.

8. Nourish from Within

Support healthy hair growth with a diet rich in vitamins and minerals like biotin, zinc, and vitamin E. Drinking plenty of water also helps maintain hydration from the inside out.

By following these steps, your curls and coils can stay vibrant, hydrated, and resilient after bleaching or dyeing. Taking extra care ensures that your hair remains strong, defined, and full of life!
